What does The Manhattan Project mean, is that the name of the game?
No, it is not the name of the game, it’s only a working title based on the first U.S military nuclear test. During final stages before official release the project will take another name, but will still be referred to as The Manhattan Project, or ‘themp’, for legal reasons.
Can I contribute something to the game myself?
Of course you can, and you are encourage to do so; that is the spirit of open source.
What do I need if I want to give you some artwork, textures, or models to use?
You must release your work under the GNU GPLv2 or greater, a copy of the license can be found here. If you never have released something under GPL before, you can check this short definition on how to release it for use within The Manhattan Project. Here are some examples of licensed products.
Do I have to use programs that are licensed under GNU GPLv2 in order to submit my contribution to your project?
No, you don’t need to do that. Any form of properitary software is perfectly valid as contributions as long as you provide the source with your media and release it under the GNU GPLv2 license.
What must I do now with my contributions, I already have a copy of the GNU GPLv2 license and I want to accept the terms of it.
You, as the author, must include that license in your (preferably .zip) file, together with the original media/code and clearly state that you release the work under ‘GNU GPLv2 or later‘. The ‘or later..‘ part is VERY important should we upgrade the license to a later revision. Once the copy of the license file, your own readme.txt, the source and the media is included, then you can simply submit it to us. Read this how-to if you need further instructions.
What do you mean by ‘source’?
Are there different sources for different media types?
This is not an easy question since the original GNU GPL license was not written to include other media such as imagery or sound, but our definitions for what source is defined as, and what we accept for this project, can be found here.
What is all this about licenses? Why is this so important?
We release the entire game, and all the media, under GNU GPLv2 for a reason, that reason is that we believe gaming should be possible without fees, gaming should be about the game, not about the money. Using GPL also ensures that people who contribute to this project maintain their copyright to their work.
Does it matter if I release my contribution under GPLv2, GPLv3 or any other license then?
As a matter of fact, it does. You are strongly encourage to use GNU GPLv2 or later when you release your contribution to us due to several factors. Most simply is the fact that GPLv2 and GPLv3 are incompatible with each other as version That is why you should use GPLv2 or later, instead of only GPLv2 when releasing your work.
